TDs welcomes back-to-school clothing and footwear allowance for Mayo families
TD Keira Keogh and Minister Alan Dillon has welcomed the opening of applications for the 2025 Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, which aims to ease the financial pressure on families preparing for the school year ahead.
Over 3,200 families in Mayo are set to benefit from the scheme, with the majority receiving payments automatically from the week beginning 14th July 2025.
The scheme provides a once-off payment of €160 for children aged 4-11 and €285 for children aged 12 years and over in second-level education.
Speaking about the announcement, Deputy Keogh said, “This support will make a real difference to families across Mayo, especially in rural communities where back-to-school costs can put huge pressure on parents.
I welcome the €54 million secured by Minister Dara Calleary for this scheme and encourage anyone unsure of their eligibility to check the details and apply online.”
Deputy Keogh also highlighted the importance of community support during this time, “As well as this help from the government, family resource centres, such as the one in Westport, often encourage people to bring in their old uniforms so others can come and collect them for further use.
These initiatives are practical, sustainable, and show the community spirit that’s alive and well here in Mayo.”
Minister of State Alan Dillon explained the mechanics of the scheme, “The rate of payment for 2025 is €160 for children aged between four and 11 years and €285 for children aged 12 years and over in second level education.
It will be paid during the week beginning, July 14 and majority of payments will be paid automatically with no application required.
“I know the pressure families can be under with back-to-school costs, and this allowance will go a long way in helping people.
More than 114,000 families nationwide will receive the payment automatically, with no need to apply.
