MEP Barry Cowen attends Mayo Fianna Fáil meeting
FIANNA Fáil MEP for Midlands North-West, Barry Cowen attended the Mayo Fianna Fáil CDC annual general meeting last week, where he chaired proceedings alongside Minister Dara Calleary and delivered a detailed update on his work in the European Parliament.
The meeting, held in Castlebar, brought together members from across the county to elect a new team of officers for Mayo Fianna Fáil’s Comhairle Dáilcheantair (CDC). The meeting marked a strong turnout and high engagement from grassroots members, reflecting the party’s continued energy and renewal in the region.
The following officers were elected: Brian Hopkins (chairperson), Micheál McNamara (vice-chairperson), Damian Biggins (secretary), John Healy and Ger Feehan (treasurers), Mags Downey Martin (PRO) and Caoilinn Gaughan (women's and equality officer).
In his remarks, Mr. Cowen outlined his focus across three key areas - agriculture and rural development, international trade and housing and planning reform - and emphasised how these files directly impact rural communities across Mayo and the wider Midlands North-West constituency.
He also discussed current challenges in EU policymaking and Ireland’s role in shaping legislation that protects rural interests, promotes fair trade and supports affordable housing delivery. The discussion touched on CAP reform, planning obstacles, and the importance of strong local representation in European debates.
Said Mr. Cowen: “It was a pleasure to chair the AGM and to see such a strong turnout from committed Mayo members. The renewal of the local organisation is vital, and I want to congratulate the newly elected team.
“Grassroots politics is where it all starts. Meetings like this one in Castlebar are a reminder of the energy and values that drive Fianna Fáil across the country.”
He added: “I gave an overview of the work I’m doing on the agriculture, trade and housing committees - all of which affect counties like Mayo in a real way. It’s important we bring that work home.
“Whether it’s pushing for fairer CAP supports, unlocking housing development or standing up for Irish trade interests, I’ll continue to ensure the priorities of this region are heard in Brussels.”
