Tom Doherty

Popular Mayo musician named Scoil Acla Artist in Residence 2025

SCOIL Acla has announced that renowned Mayo musician Tom Doherty has been appointed as the Artist in Residence for Scoil Acla 2025.

A native of Foxford, Tom Doherty is celebrated throughout Mayo, Ireland and beyond for his exceptional musicianship and deep commitment to the traditional arts.

Coming from a musical family, Tom began learning the accordion at just four years old under the tutelage of Martin Donoghue. He soon distinguished himself, winning his first All-Ireland title on the concertina and later earning an All-Ireland on the melodeon.

With a career spanning several decades, Tom Doherty is a full-time professional musician, sound engineer and music teacher. He has toured extensively across Ireland, Europe and the US, and his playing is featured on numerous television recordings and acclaimed CDs.

As musical director of the junior and teenage performance group Glór na Sí, Tom continues to inspire the next generation of musicians.

Reflecting on his appointment, Tom said: “I’m honoured to be named Artist in Residence at Scoil Acla 2025. This summer school has played a huge part in my life since John ‘Twin’ McNamara first invited me to teach here back in 1987. Over nearly four decades, I’ve shared unforgettable weeks on Achill and had the privilege of teaching alongside some of the finest musicians and tutors in the country.

“I look forward to continuing that tradition this year - sharing tunes, stories and friendships with both new and familiar faces, and passing on some of the musical experiences I’ve gathered along the way.”

Sarah Calvey, cathaoirleach of Scoil Acla, welcomed the announcement, saying: “We are thrilled to have Tom Doherty as our Artist in Residence for 2025. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the revival of Scoil Acla, and it was important for the Coiste to honour someone who has supported Scoil Acla from the very start.

“Tom’s lifelong dedication to traditional music, his talent, and his generosity as a teacher truly embody the spirit of Scoil Acla. We know he will inspire students and audiences alike throughout the week.”

Scoil Samhraidh Scoil Acla takes place from July 27 July to August 2, offering classes, concerts, recitals, competitions, workshops and music sessions for all ages and abilities. Places are very limited, with some concerts and classes already sold out.
