Third place finish for Mayo school at Primary 5s national finals
LANKILL National School were the sole Mayo representatives at the FAI Schools Primary 5s national finals held in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
The school, in Aughagower, Westport, are Mayo and Connaught champions, and this marked their debut on the national stage.
Lankill NS contested the A Girls Cup where they served up some wonderful football and did their school and county proud on the national stage.
Ultimately the Mayo school had to settle for a third place finish, with the top spot going to St. Leonard’s NS from Dunnamaggin, Co. Kilkenny.
After an opening defeat to Scoil an Choimin from Donegal, Lankill bounced back strongly to produce a 3-1 win over Tipperary's Cloughjordan NS. Aine Hughes, Karla Gibbons and Abbie Collins got the goals in what was a great team performance.
However, St. Leonard's were to remain unbeaten in securing the title, with defeat for Lankill in their final match.
A unique situation this year saw five sets of twins participating in the finals, where six national titles were up for grabs, and Lankill NS had two sets of twins involved, with Abbie and Sophie Collins playing alongside Shona and Karla Gibbons.
