Death of legendary Mayo sportsman Michael Kilcourse
The death has occurred of Michael Kilcourse, Rocklands, Castlebar.
In his 86th year, he died suddenly today while taking part in one of his life's passions: cycling.
A legendary sportsman and retired businessman, the news of his passing has cast of cloud of sadness and sorrow over a community in which he was held in such high regard due to his kind and gentle nature.
Predeceased by his sisters Bridie and Patsy, he is deeply regretted by his heartbroken wife Kay, sons John, Paul and Michael, daughters-in-law Marie, Lynsey and Paul’s partner Cora, grandchildren Michael, Gabrielle, Mimi, Roxanne and Alex, sisters Margaret, Sarah, Anne and Rosie, brothers-in-law Sean, Frank, Joey and Mick, sister-in-law Ron, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.
Michael established the family-run Bike Clinic at Springfield, Castlebar, in 1988 and continued to work there until recent years.
He was a founder member of Castlebar Cycling Club in 1953 and was an active member throughout his life.
A talented cyclist, he took part in the Rás on many occasions over the years.
Michael was also a past captain of Castlebar Golf Club.
Fond tributes are being paid to the deceased on social media.
One stated: "Mick was a true gentleman and a great sportsman - and if you could keep up to him on a bike you were going well in hail, rain and wind!"
Another said: "He was a great competitor and sportsman. He will be sadly missed."
A further tribute observed: "A lovely friendly man, with a kind word for everyone."
