Congratulations: Mayo cleric celebrates diamond jubilee

Canon Austin Fergus, Mayo Abbey, has celebrated the diamond jubilee of his ordination.

Members of his family and parishioners joined in marking his 60th year in the priesthood with Mass, having been ordained in 1965.

A native of Louisburgh, he was an accomplished Gaelic footballer in his youth and won a Hogan Cup medal with St. Jarlath's College, Tuam.

A fluent Irish speaker, he served on the Aran Island for many years before moving to Clifden and Tuam.

He has served in Mayo Abbey for the past 30 years
