"An enduring presence in cycling circles since 1950s" - Mayo tribute to Mick Kilcourse
Castlebar Cycling Club has paid tribute to one of its founder members, Michael Kilcourse, whose death has taken place.
It stated: "Mick has been immersed in cycling in Castlebar and Mayo for over 70 years.
"In his youth, he was a founding member of St. Mary’s Cycling Club, which was Castlebar’s first entry to serious racing, along with Tommy Devereux (RIP), Seamus Neary, Pat Heneghan (RIP) and Jim Heneghan.
"This group continued racing throughout the 1960s when the club sadly lapsed.
"The foundation of Castlebar Wheelers, however, in the 1970s saw a racing revival - this time round Mick was a coach, mentor and encouraged and supported a new generation of cyclists.
"The 1990s saw the opening of the Bike Clinic where Mick came to know a new circle of cycling enthusiasts.
"Here he shared his advice, expertise and enthusiasm in his trademark style with no sugar-coat - if something needed to be said, Mick would deliver. If your bike need to go to the skip rather than needed new brakes, you would be told.
"An enduring presence in cycling circles since the 1950s, Mick Kilcourse will be remembered wherever cyclists gather - Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
The club extended sympathy to the bereaved family on their loss.
Michael will repose at his residence (F23 RT26) today (Tuesday) from 2 p.m.
Removal from his residence on Wednesday morning at 10.15 a.m. for Requiem Mass at 11.30 a.m. in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.
Michael will be laid to rest afterwards in Ballyheane Cemetery.
