Mayo rural community seeking to halt controversial forest project

A Mayo rural community is up in arms after works started on planting a new forest on what they describe as 'a totally unsuitable site'.

A public meeting was held in Ballycatle at the weekend where residents expressed strong opposition to the project by Coillte, the semi-state forestry body.

The proposed site is right beside Ballycastle GAA Grounds and is approximately 30 acres at Carrowniskey, within close proximity to a number of new houses.

It is understood the GAA club lodged an objection to the project last year but never received a response

Local Councillor Jarlath Munnelly said he supports the community is seeking to halt the planting immediately and open up discussions with Coillte or the Minister for Agriculture, whose department granted planning permission for the forest.

Stated Councillor Munnelly: "It is unacceptable that there was no consultation with the residents.

"It is also unacceptable that Mayo County Council planners, who know the location well, had no input into the decision making process.

"In effect, the application was submitted to the Department of Agriculture, which made the decision.

"I don't think it's right for a government to department to be sitting in judgement on planning application involving a semi-state organisation.

"I have said that before and this process needs to be changed.

"In the meanwhile, the project must be stopped and the concerns of the residents addressed."
