Move to make Mayo town's traditional Market Square 'more functional'

Castlebar Chamber has hosted a meeting for members with businesses located on or near Market Square.

The session was facilitated by David Mellett, head of Castlebar Municipal District.

The purpose was to gather views and insights from the business community on the future development of Market Square.

The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for local business owners to share their perspectives directly with Castlebar Municipal District, ensuring their voices are heard as plans progress.

A great discussion took place, with contributions focusing on both key elements of Market Square — the road layout and signage.

The collaborative and constructive engagement highlighted the shared vision of the Chamber, businesses, and Castlebar Municipal District for an improved and vibrant Market Square that supports commerce and enhances the town centre.

Anne Conlon, president of Castlebar Chamber, commented: “We are delighted to see such strong engagement from our local business community on this important project.

"Market Square is at the heart of Castlebar, and it is vital that businesses have a say in its future.

"We look forward to working together to help deliver a Market Square that is functional, welcoming and beneficial for all.”

Castlebar Chamber extends thanks to all who participated in the consultation and looks forward to seeing the positive changes that the new Market Square will bring to the town.

One of the issues that many local people believe need addressing is that of pedestrian safety, particularly at the entrance to the public car park and crossing the busy street to Hopkins Road.
