Family carers in Mayo invited to join free dementia training course
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) is inviting family carers of people living with dementia in Mayo to take part in its free 'Insights into Dementia – Informing and Empowering Family Carers' course this September.
This in-person programme is designed to support and educate family carers by offering practical information, emotional support, and a person-centred approach to caring.
Open to anyone caring for or supporting a family member, friend or neighbour living with dementia, the course is led by expert ASI tutors and provides practical skills such as understanding dementia progression, improving communication, managing daily routines, and accessing essential supports.
Emotional support and opportunities for peer connection are also key elements, helping carers feel more confident and less isolated in their role.
The course will take place in McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, every Monday from September 8 to October 20, running from 6.30 to 9 p.m. each evening.
For those unable to attend in person, the 'Home-Based Care: Home-Based Education' online course will begin on September 8, and is open to participants nationwide.
An estimated 2,279 people are living with dementia in Mayo, with approximately 64,000 affected across Ireland.
Thérèse Shannon, lead tutor with the ASI’s Learning and Development Department and facilitator of the Mayo course, commented: “Supporting or caring for a person living with dementia is both rewarding and challenging. This in-person course in Mayo offers family carers practical tools, insights, and a space for connection. It’s designed to help carers feel more confident and less isolated by covering key areas such as communication, daily routines, and responding to behaviours.”
