Graffiti vandals have Mayo communities up in arms over damage caused

Graffiti vandals have communities in Mayo up in arms.

In follows a series of incidents in Westport and Castlebar in recent days.

Gardaí investigations are underway into the incidents at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar and the Altamount Street area of Westport.

In a Facebook post, Castlebar Tidy Towns said: "We are deeply upset at the vandalism that occurred at Lough Lannagh overnight.

"Lough Lannagh is the jewel in the crown of Castlebar and is used by thousands of locals every week so to wake up to graffiti on the bridge, a seat, and signs is very disheartening.

"So many community groups and local organisations work hard to keep this amenity in top shape for the benefit of the people of the area, and those who perpetrated this have no respect for us as a community.

"The incident is currently being investigated and we are appealing for people that may have information to contact An Garda Síochána on (094) 903 8200 or Castlebar Tidy Towns.

"CCTV is currently being examined and we ask anyone that may have been at Lough Lannagh last night with dash-cam footage to please pass it on to us. It will be treated in confidence.

"Our colleagues at Westport Tidy Towns have had the same problem recently and this will not be tolerated."
