Mayo TD welcomes self-advocacy group to Leinster House

A group of Mayo advocates received a warm welcome at Leinster House this week, as Deputy Keira Keogh hosted the Mayo Self-Advocacy Group during a special visit to the national parliament this week.

The group, supported by Western Care Association, is made up of self-advocates elected by their peers.

They work to promote the rights and inclusion of people with intellectual and associated disabilities, aiming to ensure everyone can live full and meaningful lives in their communities.

During their visit, the group enjoyed lunch and a guided tour of Leinster House, accompanied by support staff who help enable their advocacy work.

Deputy Keogh praised the group’s efforts and highlighted their recent short film, I.T. and Me, which explores the challenges faced by people with intellectual disabilities in the digital world.

She expressed her intention to welcome the group back for a special screening of the film at Leinster House in the near future.

“It was a real honour to host the Mayo Self-Advocacy Group,” Deputy Keogh said.

“Their voices are vital in shaping inclusive policy, and their film is a powerful reflection of lived experience in today’s digital society.”
