Appeal to remove unwelcome ‘guests’ from derelict Mayo hotel

A Mayo elected representative has called for the removal of some unusual and unwelcome occupants from the long-derelict Imperial Hotel building in the heart of Castlebar.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Al McDonnell raised concerns about reports of a rodent infestation at the historic premises on The Mall.

The former Imperial Hotel, Castlebar.

“I understand the Imperial Hotel has been occupied by a rodent family,” said Councillor McDonnell.

“They do not appear to be happy with the quality of service or the delicacies on offer and have since relocated to neighbouring properties. I would prefer to see members of a different species there.”

Councillor McDonnell urged the council to take swift action to address the situation, which he described as unacceptable in a prominent town centre location.

Responding to the concerns, the head of the Castlebar Municipal District, David Mellett, thanked the cathaoirleach for highlighting the issue.

Mr. Mellett admitted he had not been aware of the infestation but gave a commitment that works would begin to remove the rodents from the area.

The Imperial Hotel has lain vacant and derelict for several years and has been the subject of much local debate.

Hopes that the building would be redeveloped as a hotel were dashed earlier this year when Mayo County Council confirmed the property will remain in public ownership.

While the building will not return to use as a hotel, there are now tentative plans to develop it into an innovation hub, part of wider efforts to revitalise the centre of Castlebar.
