New lease of life for iconic Mayo football venue

One of Mayo's oldest and most iconic football grounds - The Point at the Quay in Westport - has been given a new lease of life.

Westport United FC has reported on the wonderful work that has taken place at the venue.

The club outlined: "For generations of Westport United players, coaches, and supporters, The Point has always been more than just a football pitch.

"Tucked away on the Quay, it’s a special place where young players took their first steps in the game, where teams trained through wind and rain, and where some great local footballing memories were made.

"Even with the growth of our club and the move to AbbVie United Park, The Point has remained close to our hearts, still in regular use and still playing a role in the lifeblood of the club.

"That’s why we’re proud to share that we’ve recently invested significantly in upgrading the grass pitch at The Point — a real commitment to preserving and improving one of the most important parts of our club’s history.

"This upgrade is about more than the surface — it’s about maintaining the connection between past and present. It’s a space that has shaped players for decades, and thanks to continued investment, it will continue to do so for years to come.

"Thanks to everyone who’s played a part in looking after The Point down through the years — from volunteers to coaches and everyone in between.

"Particular thanks to our club sponsors and those who support the club through the weekly lotto, without whom this type of investment simply wouldn’t be possible."

There are many memorable stories told about the ground, including one about the Castlebar Celtic player who dived into the sea to retrieve the ball during a game.

It was the former grounds of Quay Hearts, one of the founder members of the Mayo Football League in 1954.
