New graveyard approved for Mayo parish after land transfer
A new graveyard is set to be developed in Mayo Abbey following unanimous approval by Castlebar councillors to proceed with the transfer of land for burial purposes.
The motion, brought before the Castlebar Municipal District meeting, was proposed by Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere and seconded by his party colleague councillor Cyril Burke.
The decision was welcomed across the chamber as a significant and necessary development for the local community.
Councillor Burke, in supporting the motion, joked that it’s “somewhere I may spend a lot of time in the future, but hopefully not too soon.”
He praised all those involved in securing the site, noting that various locations had been considered before settling on what he described as “the most ideal piece of ground.”
“One of the key advantages is that when funeral remains are being removed, all cars can remain at the church, and people will be able to walk directly to the burial ground,” he said.
Councillor Burke extended his thanks to the landowner Seamus Hughes, as well as the Mayo Abbey Parish Development Association, for their cooperation and commitment in bringing the plan to fruition.
