Mayo outdoor swimming infrastructure projects launched
THREE new swimming shelters are among six outdoor swimming infrastructure projects to be launched in Mayo.
The outgoing cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor John O'Hara, was on hand at Ross Beach in Killala to formally launch the Healthy Ireland funded projects that were recently completed by community groups across the county.
Funding of €24,000 was allocated to Mayo Sports Partnership in 2024, with six projects funded through a transparent application process. They included swimming shelters at Ross Beach, Kilcummin and Eachleim in Erris, along with the steel reinforcement of existing handrails and additional handrails for Curran Beach on Inishturk, outdoor furniture at Dooega Beach in Achill and swimming markers for Castlebar Triathlon Club.
Councillor O'Hara congratulated all the community groups and clubs involved in making the applications and for following through on the projects.
Growth in outdoor swimming has been evident in recent years throughout the country, and particularly so in Mayo. Mayo Sports Partnership works closely with Swim Ireland in providing outdoor swimming programmes in Belmullet, Old Head Beach in Louisburgh, Dugort in Achill and other venues across the county.
A new round of Healthy Ireland outdoor swimming infrastructure funding is expected to be available in 2025. For more information on outdoor recreation, contact Kieran Reilly at Mayo Sports Partnership - email kreilly@mayococo.ie or phone (094) 9064823.
