Simon Butler's goal proves crucial in Tuohy Cup final

Claremorris recorded a slender 1-0 victory against Castlebar Celtic B in the Tuohy Cup Final, at Milebush Park, on Saturday.

The south Mayo side, who are also chasing promotion to the Super League, fashioned the lead on 30 minutes. A fizzing free-kick from Mark Maloney was parried by Jack Jensen, however, the recycled possession fell to Simon Butler and the latter rustled the back of the net.

The green and white then thought they had doubled their lead on 35 minutes, but Mark Maloney’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Seven minutes into the second period, Claremorris’ Mark Maloney tried his luck with an ambitious chip, which sailed off target.

Celtic’s best chances of the second half fell to Gerry Hunt, but on both occasions his long-range attempts failed to test Keith Saunders.

Claremorris were a well-structured side and the green and white almost added the insurance goal on 84 minutes, but Butler’s chance was thwarted by Jensen.

Castlebar Celtic upped the tempo during the final moments of the game, but they could find no way past a rigid Claremorris defence, with Brandon Walsh producing a tidy display at right-back for the Concannon Park side.
