Mayo gaelscoil celebrates unprecedented sporting success
THE entire school community at Gaelscoil de Búrca, Claremorris, is beaming with pride following the outstanding success of their boys’ and girls’ football, hurling and camogie teams, who recently triumphed at the Cumann na mBunscol inter-schools competitions.
Sport is a central part of school life at Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca, and, in recent weeks, pupils demonstrated exceptional talent, teamwork and perseverance across the football and hurling fields.
Their skills were honed under the expert coaching of John and Jack Comer, who, alongside sixth class teacher Múinteoir Ciarán, developed strong boys’ and girls’ football teams.
The hard work paid off and the boys team qualified for the county final in MacHale Park, where they were crowned county champions. An incredible accomplishment for the boys and their coaches. The girls football team also emerged as champions of the Mini 7s football competition.
Two first place trophies now sit with pride in the school after the football success.
The success didn’t stop there for the Gaelscoil players. As well as training for football, both boys and girls had exceptional hurling and camogie teams. The hurling and camogie teams were coached by múinteoir Breda, and they made full use of the school's astro pitch, training, preparing and enjoying the build up to the games.
It came to pass that the boys hurling team and the girls camogie team reached their respective Cumann na mBunscol finals, and both teams were crowned champions yet again. Another two county final trophies to add to the trophy cabinet!
After securing four trophies, there was plenty to celebrate in the run up to summer holidays for all at Gaelcoil de Búrca.
A special word of thanks is extended to John and Jack Comer, Múinteoir Ciarán Ó Coigligh and Múinteoir Breda Kean, as well as to the school principal, Máire Uí Dhinnéide.
Local clubs Claremorris GAA, Ballyhaunis GAA, Davitts GAA, Aghamore GAA, Tooreen GAA and The Neale GAA are also very proud to have been well represented on the playing pitches.
Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca is in the fortunate position to have a new, full size astro pitch for pupils to make ample use of throughout the school year. On the rainy days, they utilise their large indoor multi-purpose hall and they are grateful to have such facilities.
The school wishes to also thank all the other school teams they played along the way.
Thanks to the organisers of Cumann na mBunscol. It is an event that is a true highlight in the school calendar year after year and one which pupils, teachers, parents and the communities look forward to.
It goes without saying that the entire school body and community is extremely proud of the boys and girls who played with skill and determination. More importantly, they togged out with a good attitude, respect and a great outlook.
Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca looks forward to building on this success in the years ahead and watching pupils flourish and enjoy sport.
