Plans progressing for new inclusive playground in Mayo village
PLANS are progressing for a new inclusive playground in Bohola.
It's the latest phase of the Durkan Bohola Community Park development, with planning permission granted and the project gone out to tender.
The playground will be inclusive for all ages and abilities, creating a safe, welcoming space for every child and family in the community.
In an update on its social media, Durkan Bohola Community Park said the next phase of development is officially underway. Following the success of Micksey’s Way walking path, they're now preparing to bring a new inclusive playground to life.
Full planning permission has been granted and the project is now out to tender for contractors.
Funding applications have been submitted to support the development, and a community contribution of €25,000 will be required.
The project will include a high-quality, inclusive playground, new entrance and carpark, lighting and footpaths.
Its design is guided by Mayo County Council policies, which prioritise safety, accessibility and inclusivity, universal access with accessible surfacing, ramps and inclusive equipment, a child-centred approach that values play as essential for development, and community involvement in design and feedback.
The use of natural elements and 'play along the way' design features are also included in the proposal.
In its update, the park committee said: 'Playgrounds like this are more than just fun - they're essential spaces that foster well-being, creativity, connection, and active living for all generations.
'This development will help make Durkan Bohola Community Park a destination in the heart of Mayo for locals and visitors alike.
'We’ll be sharing updates, plans, and ways you can support this incredible community project in the coming weeks. Thank you for being part of this exciting journey.'
