Mayo teen's Connacht Rugby selection creates unique family record
CLAREMORRIS Colts RFC youths player Tom Smyth has been selected to the Connacht Rugby Under 17 squad in advance of their summer training programme and Inter Pro series of games.
The Kiltimagh teenager, who just completed his Junior Cert at St. Louis Community School, took to the sport at an early age, practicing on sidelines during the Colts' minis rugby sessions on Saturday mornings, while his older brothers Liam and Michael were training. He progressed up through the age groups and impressed with his ball carrying skills, tackling, speed and agility.
Son of Gary and Dymphna Smyth, Tom joins a unique family record on the three brothers' selection on the Connacht Rugby Youths panels.
Coincidentally, the three lads won Player of the Year in their respective age groups at the Claremorris Colts Awards event the season before last.
Tom also excels at basketball, playing for his home club and school, and also plays Gaelic football for Kiltimagh and is on the Mayo GAA youth players developmental academy.
The Colts have sent their congratulations and best wishes to Tom on this latest chapter in his sporting career.
