East Mayo side withdraw from Super League after difficult season

Kiltimagh/Knock United have officially withdrawn from the Elverys Sports Mayo Super League, following a turbulent campaign marked by a series of unfulfilled fixtures.

The east Mayo side conceded a game last week against Westport United and had been fixed to play against Castlebar Celtic this evening.

The club faced a number of setbacks both on and off the pitch in recent months and will now begin next season in League Two, the bottom tier of Mayo League football.

It’s a significant step backwards for the Kiltimagh/Knock outfit, who must now set about rebuilding and working their way back toward the top flight.

The decision comes in the wake of a particularly challenging season for the club.

Despite the high-profile appointment of former Galway United goalkeeper Alan Gough as head coach earlier in the year, the team struggled to gain traction in the Super League.

Gough’s time at the helm was short-lived, with the former League of Ireland shot-stopper departing Cloonlee before the end of the campaign.

Compounding the club’s difficulties was the loss of several key players during the season, which left the squad stretched.

The situation deteriorated further when the club was forced to withdraw its “B” team due to a lack of available players, a move that foreshadowed their eventual Super League exit.
