Night-time closure of busy Mayo road to facilitate verge maintenance

A section of the N5 dual carriageway between Westport and Turlough is set to close temporarily later this month to allow for essential verge grass cutting.

Mayo County Council confirmed the plans in a notice issued under the Roads Act 1993 and Roads Regulations 1994.

The works are scheduled to take place between Monday, July 14, and Sunday, July 27, though the actual road closure will be limited to a maximum of five nights within that period.

The closure will be in effect each night from 7.00 p.m. until 6.00 a.m. the following morning.

The specific dates of the closure have not yet been finalised but will be communicated in advance of the works commencing.

The council has also advised that the road may reopen earlier than planned should the maintenance be completed ahead of schedule.

The affected stretch of road extends from the N5/R309 roundabout at Turlough to the N5 dual carriageway/single carriageway roundabout at Westport.

The temporary closure is necessary to carry out verge grass cutting safely along the busy route, which serves as a key artery through the county.

Diversion routes will be in place for the duration of the closure, with all detours clearly signposted.

Both westbound and eastbound traffic on the N5 will be redirected onto the old N5 route via the R309.

Similarly, traffic approaching from Breaffy Road (N60/R308) and Ballinrobe Road (N84/R307) will be guided onto the R309 during the nighttime restrictions.

Emergency services will retain full access throughout the operation, and Mayo County Council has confirmed that all arrangements have been made in consultation with An Garda Síochána.

The council has apologised for any inconvenience caused and is appealing to motorists for patience and understanding as these necessary maintenance works are carried out.
