Gerry Adams plants a special tree at Mayo woodland

FORMER Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has planted a special tree in Co. Mayo.

Crann na Saoirse is the latest addition at the Martin Neary Woodland Park in Madogue, midway between Swinford and Charlestown.

It was Martin Neary's wish that Gerry Adams would set an oak tree in the native woodland developed on lands he bequeathed to Mayo County Council for generations to enjoy.

Today, Mr. Adams honoured that wish and after the tree planting, both men unveiled a plaque dedicated to Crann na Saoirse with the inscription 'This tree will grow tall in a united Ireland'.

Other guests welcomed to the Neary homestead for the ceremony included Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh, Councillor Gerry Murray, Gerry Adams and members of Mayo Sinn Féin.

Martin Neary has been widely hailed for his generosity in donating his lands to the community for a native woodland on the stipulation that the land is never sold or developed.

The park will also be his final resting place after he received permission to be buried there.
