Silent protest to be held at Mayo council HQ over proposed sale of land to hotel
A silent protest is taking place today over plans to sell council-owned land to a hotel business in Westport.
The protest will be held outside the headquarters of Mayo County Council in Castlebar at 1 p.m., ahead of a meeting of the local authority at 2 p.m.
The silent picket is being organised by Westport Action for Youth, a local group of residents who came together some time ago to advocate for the development of Westport's town centre playground and adjoining green space at the leisure park into a community park for all.
The group says it has shown there’s a real need and strong desire for a free, accessible community space in the town but feel their voices are being ignored.
Mayo County Council proposes selling 0.2671 Ha. at Church Street, Westport, to Wyatt Hotel Unlimited, The Octagon.
The proposed sale was approved by all local councillors in the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District last month and is on the agenda for final approval at today's (Monday) meeting of Mayo County Council.
The sale price is €670,000 and, in addition to the purchase price, the purchaser will provide a €280,000 contribution towards public amenities development.
