Two adventurers off Mayo coast in historic canoe journey

TWO adventurers from the UK, Rich Ensoll and Johan Hoving, are undertaking a remarkable challenge this summer.

If successful they will be the first ever to canoe around the entire coastline of Ireland in a handmade, skin-on-frame canoe. Their journey will raise funds for Oxfam Ireland and one other cause.

The duo are nearing the Mayo coast having set off from Crosshaven Marina in Co. Cork on July 1 to navigate Ireland’s rugged shores, facing Atlantic swells, fast tides and dramatic headlands. You can track them here.

The trip marks more than a physical feat. It’s a journey of introspection, connection, and purpose in an age of climate disaster.

“Canoeing round Ireland is a hopeful exercise on slowing down, embracing the unknown, and reconnecting with nature to raise funds for impactful causes,” said Rich Ensoll, senior lecturer in outdoor studies at the University of Cumbria. “We will do our very best to weather choppy seas to do our part in making the world a better place.”

Their vessel, Ronan, was crafted in Ireland by John Wilkinson of Valkyrie Craft, inspired by ancient boat-building traditions that stretch back thousands of years. The canoe’s design echoes the curragh, once a vital link between coastal communities and a symbol of resilience and exploration.

Johan Hoving, a dynamic outdoor expert, brings vital energy to the joint expedition. He said: “When Rich asked me to join him, I said yes without hesitation. It’s a chance to do something extraordinary and meaningful that only a privileged few can even try.”

Funds raised will support Oxfam Ireland’s work in tackling poverty and injustice, as well as the Kepplewray Trust’s Participation and Inclusion Fund, which helps people of all abilities access outdoor experiences.

Jim Clarken, Oxfam Ireland, said: "This journey is a beautiful reminder of how powerful community can be when paired with courage. We’re incredibly grateful to Rich and Johan for choosing to support Oxfam Ireland in such a unique and inspiring way. Their adventure speaks to the heart of what our organisation strives to stand for - resilience, solidarity, and hope for a better future."

As they paddle, sail (and occasionally nap) in their canoe, the team are sharing their journey through an online blog, offering stories, photographs, and reflections from the water.
