Consultation open on first phase of north Mayo loop project
PUBLIC consultation has opened on the Blacksod Bay loop project (phase 1), with proposed traffic calming works.
The works, in a project to create a shared used facility, are proposed on the L-5233-0, L-52364 and L-52361, Binghamstown to Cross Lake and Cross Abbey.
Project reports published online set out how Mayo County Council proposes to provide a share use facility for walking, wheeling and cycling along the proposed Blacksod Loop between Binghamstown and Cross Lake, along these quiet local roads.
The existing local roads that will accommodate the share use facility will remain two-way, with no reduction in vehicular capacity. Safety along the roads for use by walkers, wheelers and cyclists will be enhanced.
The proposed works comprise of the civil and road surfacing works, which include traffic calming measures, resurfacing and overlaying, signage and road markings, with all associated site works.
The use of quiet roads will repurpose existing infrastructure into renewed spaces to improve local and network connectivity, increase mode shift, improve physical fitness and improve the sense of community along the route.
It is envisaged that the complete route will serve the interurban travel and leisure functions for many residents of all ages along the route and surroundings and as a tourism attraction to County Mayo, both domestic and internationally.
