A celebration of community, nature and legacy in north-west Mayo
The Great Erris Run returns this summer on Sunday, August 10 – and this year’s event carries a deeply personal and heartfelt meaning.
It will be run in loving memory of Pauline Sweeney (née Corrigan), a cherished member of the Erris community, with all proceeds going to MS Ireland, supporting individuals and families affected by Multiple Sclerosis across the country.
Sanctioned and measured by Athletics Ireland, the race offers 5k and 10k route options and invites runners, walkers and outdoor lovers to experience the unique beauty of north Mayo and the warmth of the people who call it home.
Organised by M Fitness, the Great Erris Run is about more than just the distance. It’s about coming together, celebrating our connection to the land, and remembering those who’ve shaped our lives and communities.
“Pauline was a remarkable person, and this event honours her spirit in the most meaningful way through movement, community, and giving back,” said Michael Doocey, MD of M Fitness. “We hope everyone from Erris and beyond joins us on the day.”
Marking the beginning of Belmullet Festival Week, the race begins and ends at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel and takes participants through a stunning coastal loop, with views of Blacksod Bay, Broadhaven Bay and the rugged outline of Achill Island in the distance all included free of charge.
These untamed landscapes – windswept, wild, and deeply healing – remind us of what makes Erris so special.
Whether you're running in memory of someone, for a personal challenge, or just to be part of something local and uplifting, the Great Erris Run offers a moment to reconnect – with nature, with each other, and with the place so many are happy to call home.
After crossing the finish line, participants are encouraged to cool off with a dip in the Belmullet Tidal Pool – one of the world’s most scenic and culturally celebrated seawater pools – or explore one of Erris’s many secluded beaches.
Leading up to the event, M Fitness currently run a free weekly Sunday morning social run at 10 a.m., meeting at the back of Broadhaven Bay Hotel at the M Fitness gym.
This is designed to support runners and walkers of all abilities. The weekly sessions include coaching tips, social runs, and a coffee meet-up to answer training questions in a relaxed and supportive setting.
“You don’t need to be an elite runner. The course is flat and accessible,” said Doocey. “This race is for everyone, whether you're aiming for a personal best or simply want to share a beautiful experience with others.”
The entry fee of €32.10 includes a t-shirt, medal, chip timing, post-race refreshments and processing fees. Runners must be over 18 (for insurance reasons) to take part.
