Legacy of legendary Mayo handballer to be celebrated

THE legacy of a legendary Mayo handballer will be celebrated in his home town this weekend.

A memorial bench dedicated to Newport handballer Peter McGee will be unveiled on Sunday, July 20, at 11.30 a.m. in Sandymount, Newport.

Afterwards, Newport Handball Club invites everyone to Newport Alley for an exhibition game with the club's 2025 All-Ireland Feile winners.

Light refreshments will be served after in the Grainne Uaile pub.

A true sporting icon, the event is an opportunity to pay special tribute to Peter’s remarkable sporting achievements and lasting impact.

One of Ireland’s greatest ever handballers, he dominated the sport for over 20 years, winning 17 All-Ireland medals, 10 men's singles medals and seven doubles.

Outside of sport, Peter was a much loved figure in the local community and this recognition and celebration locally has been warmly received.
