Death of widely-respected Mayo auctioneer Tom Collins evokes great sense of loss
The death has taken place of Tomás (Tom) Collins, Mallard Lodge, Newport Road, and formerly of Castle Street, Castlebar.
In his early 60s, he died suddenly at his home earlier today.
A member of one of Castlebar's oldest and most respected families, the news has evoked a tremendous sense of loss and sadness in the community where he was held in such high regard and respect.
Tom became an auctioneer 1986, setting up Collins Estate Agents at Castle Street, Castlebar, and was elected president of the Institute of Auctioneers in 1996.
He also served on the council of auctioneers for over 25 years
Tom worked in the Mayo fire services for 15 years, a role to which he dedicated himself with immense commitment.
An artist of note, he undertook commissioned work and his paintings have helped raised thousands of euro for Mayo Roscommon Hospice and the Western Care Association.
Following the death of his mother Tess in 2019, he took over the running of the family's long-established music shop at Castle Street as well as continuing to operate his auctioneering business.
He was a dedicated member of Fine Gael for many years and a ran as a candidate in the local elections in 1993.
Tom had a keen interest in the life and achievements of the great Michael Collins, one of Ireland's greatest political figures.
Predeceased by his parents Tomas and Tess, he is deeply regretted by his wife Anne, son Jack, daughters Ruth and Alexandra, sister Mary McDonnell (Rockfield, Turlough), brothers-in-law Gerry Cullen, Con Cullen and Stephen McDonnell, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
