Impressive Westport United inaugural winners of Mayo League's Benson Cup
Westport United had too much in the tank for Ballinrobe Town as Anthony O’Neill’s charges recorded a 5-0 victory in the Benson Cup Final, played at Milebush Park.
Ballinrobe Town were under pressure during the opening exchanges, and the red and white had to rely on a counter attacking style of play.
However, United’s attacking forays eventually paid dividends on 23 minutes, when the busy Dylan O’Malley set-up Darren Browne and the latter’s exquisite finish was beyond the reach of Sean Shaughnessy.
A brave Ballinrobe struggled to test the Westport custodian during the first half, and the west Mayo side doubled their advantage on 34 minutes, courtesy of Dylan O’Malley.
The leaders then trebled their lead on 37 minutes when a through ball from Dylan O’Malley was collected by Cian Halpin and the latter rustled the back of the net.
Just before the break, Westport effectively ended the game as a contest when the influential Kevin Kitterick added a fourth.
Ballinrobe’s best chance of the second half arrived on 55 minutes, when Peter Butler’s delivery found Richard Dalton, whose deft header drifted wide.
With just eight minutes remaining, United added a fifth goal. Some intricate build up play involving the energetic Mikey O’Brien, Dan O’Malley, and Browne, ended with the latter applying a tidy close-range finish to the back of the net.
