Planning appeal over ALDI sign at Mayo outlet rejected
AN appeal against the erection of a proposed sign on an ALDI store in north Mayo has been turned down.
It relates to the supermarket chain's outlet at Bury Street/Teeling Street in Ballina, where it proposed erecting a non-illuminated gable Aldi sign (3 square metres) on the southern elevation of the building.
Mayo County Council planners agreed the proposal was fine to proceed, but that decision was appealed by two third parties who are residents along Bury Street.
Concerns included adverse impact on the setting of two protected structures located within 50 metres of the proposed signage. The signage would breach the provisions of the Ballina signage and shopfront guidelines, it was submitted, and its design and location would materially and adversely impact the character of the streetscape and the heritage value of the area.
Reference was also made to a discrepancy between the type of signage sought (non-illuminated) by the applicants and the type of signage conditioned by the planning authority.
In its ruling, the appeals board agreed with the findings of its inspector that the modest scale of the non-illuminated sign would not adversely impact upon this town centre zoned site.
It would not adversely impact the amenities of neighbouring residents or the local streetscape and would not detract from the architectural and visual amenities of the area.
