Welcome road works in west Mayo area

ROAD works in the Westport area, around Belclare and Murrisk, have been welcomed by Councillor Peter Flynn.

The section on the coast road between the Streamstown Road and Belclare junction will be totally resurfaced in the next week or so (L1801).

At the start of September, 3km of the main road to Louisburgh will be resurfaced from Belclare junction to Killadangan/Deerpark area (R335).

Today and Thursday there will be some remediation works linked to the trench that was done as part of the water scheme just outside Murrisk (Louisburgh side), with motorists advised of disruptions for these two days.

In a social media post confirming the works, and noting the need that more needs to be done, Councillor Flynn said: “I would love to be telling you that the council will be doing more than 3km of a road that was significantly damaged during the construction of the new water main to Kilsallagh, but it is a council-funded road and we are dealing with an organisation that has to deal with 6,000km of roads within a tight budget.

“It is a council problem and shouting at TII, the government or the Department of Transport won't make a whit of a difference.

“At least there is progress even if it is slow.”
