Mayo memorial in honour of Charlie Bird is blessed at Croagh Patrick

A memorial in honour of the late Charlie Bird and his 2022 climb for charity which raised €3.6 million, has been blessed at the foot of Croagh Patrick, Murrisk, Westport.

The ceremony took place during Garland Friday Mass celebrated by Fr. John Kenny Adm., and Canon Tony King, Westport.

It was attended by Claire, wife of the late Charlie Bird, her dog Tiger, as well as family and friends, including acclaimed musician Matt Molloy.

The Climb with Charity event took place on April 2, 2022, and raised €3.6 million for the Motor Neurons Disease Association and Pieta House.

It was one of the biggest charity events ever undertaken in the county and attracted a huge attendance on the day.

Charlie Bird, a former RTÉ journalist, died on March 11, 2024.

He had motor neurone disease (MND) for a number of years.

Mr. Bird was at the forefront of the reporting of the Northern Ireland peace process during the 1990s.

He travelled the world reporting from Rwanda, Washington, Indonesia and Haiti – before retiring as RTÉ’s chief news correspondent in 2010.
