Approval for south Mayo village enhancement plan
PLANS for a village enhancement scheme in The Neale have been approved at municipal level by local councillors.
The works include hard and soft landscaping works to existing and proposed link paths.
A paved ‘public plaza’ area will be created within the public green space surrounding the ball alley, with the ball alley to remain untouched.
A dual cycle/walking lane is proposed to the western side of the public road from the village boundaries north and south.
Also included are village ‘gateway’ hard and landscaping features along with pedestrian crossings to narrow road and improve road safety of users.
Five submissions were received by Mayo County Council after the plans went out for public engagement.
In general they were in favour of the development, and looking for it to be extended further out from the village core. Another matter concerned an access at a right of way, with contact made and it largely resolved.
Councillor Damien Ryan said the village enhancement scheme is the subject of an application to the department and it will represent a €500,000 investment if successful.
He acknowledged the work that has gone into the project, saying it would be a 'game changer' for The Neale, which has a very active community.
The adoption of the plan was seconded by Councillor Patsy O'Brien.
