Leading Mayo GAA Club start production on major documentary
Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club, in conjunction with Community Radio Castlebar (CRCfm), is set to record its 140 year history in a radio documentary.
Castlebar Mitchels is an integral part of the local community.
The History of Castlebar Mitchels and the GAA from 1885 to current times delves into the archives to trace the background of one of Castlebar's most successful clubs.
The History of Castlebar Mitchels is one ultimately that has been built from the ground up to its present position.
Club public relations officer Martin Corcoran outlined: "Our history is our past but it can shape our future, that’s why it’s so important to document our past and preserve it for future generations.
"Every year since the late 1800s has served as a building block in the overall progress of Castlebar Mitchels, that building will never be finished because going forward the club will evolve in different ways.
"The aim of this project is to record, collect and preserve the memories, stories and opinions of the people involved in Castlebar Mitchels.
“This historical project is of fundamental importance as we formalise our club's history for future generations.
"I would like to thank CRCfm for their collaboration on this historical project in particular the sports department.
"I would also encourage members of our club and the wider community to get involved in whatever way they can. The aim is to start this project and produce after the club championship.”
Kieran Lavelle, chairman, Castlebar Mitchels, outlined that he was really looking forward to the project.
“I thank the sub-committee and Castlebar Community Radio for their collaboration on this important project and look forward to a trip down memory lane and uncovering some interesting stories from time past”
Castlebar Community Radio sports editor Liam Byrne said: “Over the last number of years, CRCfm and Castlebar Mitchels have built a strong partnership rooted in mutual support and community spirit.
"For us in the CRCfm Sports Department, the sense of community and belonging is at the heart of everything we do.
"As Castlebar’s community radio station, fostering these connections is not just part of our mission — it’s who we are. As the eternal line goes, “You can’t beat being part of it” — and when it comes to Ireland’s national sports, that sentiment rings truer than ever."
