Mayo Comhaltas initiative Cuimsiú to feature on RTÉ's Nationwide

RTÉ Nationwide will air a special feature on Cuimsiú this Wednesday, a powerful initiative developed by Mayo Comhaltas to foster inclusivity and belonging within the world of Irish traditional music.

The Cuimsiú initiative includes an inclusive competition for performers with additional needs/disabilities, offering performers the opportunity to participate in the Fleadh Cheoil in a format tailored to their individual needs. It is grounded in the values of flexibility, dignity, and joy, ensuring that all, regardless of ability, feel welcomed and supported.

Mayo launched the Cuimsiú competition at Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo 2024 in Westport. Its heartfelt success led to a warmly received return in 2025, with continued valued support from Áirc Mayo, Down Syndrome Mayo and Ballina Autism Friendly Town.

Earlier this year, Mayo Comhaltas were the recipients of the Mayo Cathaoirleach Award for Contribution to Community Life Awards - Community Social Inclusion Project Award, in recognition of their Cuimsiú initiative.

Cuimsiú offers competitors choices: to perform with or without an audience, to use notes or visual aids, to have a support person with them, and even to choose whether or not they wish to receive applause. A quiet room is available throughout the day, providing a calm space for anyone who needs a break. These accommodations create a safe and encouraging atmosphere where each performer can shine.

This year also saw the introduction of the Cuimsiú Sessions - informal, welcoming gatherings where participants can meet, play music, sing, dance and build confidence with support from local Comhaltas musicians and volunteers. These joyful sessions have become a key part of the Cuimsiú journey and offer a meaningful entry point for branches looking to get involved.

The upcoming RTÉ Nationwide episode features an insightful interview with Mairéad Dunford and her husband Chuck. It was their daughter Hannah who asked the question that sparked the Cuimsiú movement for inclusion in Mayo: “When can I play at the Fleadh?”

The success of the Cuimsiú initiative in Mayo shows what’s possible when we remove barriers and open the stage to all in our community who wish to take part in our musical tradition. Ní neart go cur le chéile - there is strength in unity.

The RTÉ Nationwide feature will air on Wednesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. on RTÉ One.
