Ballina Town, Kiltimagh/Knock and Manulla celebrate divisional cup wins
BALLINA Town, Kiltimagh Knock United and Manulla FC women's teams are celebrating after winning their respective divisional cup finals, sponsored by Eco Powered Cabinets, over the course of a busy weekend for the Mayo Women's League.
Manulla retained the Tommy Rumley Cup following a penalty shootout with Castlebar Town, Kiltimagh Knock United played out an eight-goal thriller in the Mary Walsh Cup against Killala, winning 5-3, while Ballina Town made it a league and cup double when seeing off the challenge of Achill Rovers 4-0 in the Division 2 Cup final.
Manulla have now retained the Rumley Cup for a third consecutive year, defeating Castlebar Town 4-3 on penalties after a fiercely contested 0–0 draw at Umbro Park, Milebush.
Castlebar Town went into the game as Premier Division champions and two wins over Manulla under their belts in the league, but in a gritty, intense game where defences were hard breached, the holders held their nerve to bring the silverware back home with them again.
Kiltimagh Knock United won their first ever Mary Walsh Cup after a thrilling game against Killala, who were bidding to retain the Division 1 cup which they won last season.
The game saw six first-half goals, with Shona Mahon completing a hat-trick late on for KK to seal the victory.
The sides had both enjoyed home wins over the other in the league, but KK have really found form as the season has progressed and proved too strong on the day.
Ballina Town delivered a commanding performance to claim the first ever Mayo Women's League Eco Powered Cabinets Division 2 Cup title.
Unbeaten in league competition this season, they came into the final as favourites, and lived up to expectations.
It was always going to be a difficult task for Achill, but this is their first season fielding a women’s senior team and reaching a final at their first attempt is a great achievement.
