Mountain rescue teams responded to 10 incidents on Reek Sunday

MOUNTAIN rescue teams responded to 10 incidents where pilgrims needed assistance while climbing Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday.

In an update on the day, Mayo Mountain Rescue said it had been a good Reek Sunday, despite weather being rough at times with a lot of mist on the summit cone.

Mountain Rescue had 65 personnel working in two shifts, starting at 6 a.m. and finishing around 5 p.m.

Teams responded to 10 incidents on the mountain, with two evacuated by the Air Corp helicopter, two stretchered and six walked off with assistance.

Late on, while packing up, a callout was received from National Ambulance Control to assist a woman who had fallen on the track about 30 minutes from the carpark and was unable to continue walking. She damaged her ankle and was being attended to by Order of Malta members.

Mayo Mountain Rescue first response team, who were making their way back to base, on the other side of the mountain, were diverted to her location and provided emergency care until the stretcher party arrived, bring the casualty to a waiting ambulance in Murrisk for further assessment and treatment.

MMRT thanked all the visiting teams for their support, including Dublin-Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team, South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association, Irish Cave Rescue Organisation – ICRO and Galway Mountain Rescue Team, as well as Dr. Scott Walkin, paramedics Joe O'Gorman and Ben Battle, the Irish Air Corps helicopter crew and ground man, AGS, Murrisk Development Association, Mayo County Council and Westport Order of Malta.
