Quality stock out for Continental sale at Mayo mart

THERE were some great cattle at Balla Mart on Saturday for the end of month Continental sale.

Some stores were up by approximately €200 on last week.

Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.91/kg, store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.79/kg, while heavier bullocks 500kg plus were well up and averaged €4.62/kg.

A two-year-old bullock weighing 690kg made €3,380 (€4.90/kg) for a Castlebar farmer.

Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €5.17/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.89/kg, and those 500kg plus averaged €4.66/kg.

460kg BBX €3,100

635kg BBX €3,820

A farmer who travelled from Athlone had a cracking March ‘24 Limousin heifer weighing 385kg that made €2,890 (€7.51/kg).

As usual, the cows were a good trade, with prices holding up well and giving the biggest prices.

Dry cows 500kg plus averaged €3.95/kg this week, with a lot of heavy, fleshy cows and not many stores or feeding cows.

The tops in the dry cows was a six-year-old Charolais weighing 795kg that made €3,580 for a farmer from Castlebar.

Best this week in the springers was a four-year-old SIX recip cow - dam Corrandulla Princess and its Belgian Blue bull calf at foot sired by DouDou - that was bought for €6,650 from a farmer who travelled all the way from Athboy in Co. Meath.

Weanlings were sold after the bullocks and prices were similar to last week due to great demand from export buyers.

Bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg averaged €4.97/kg, with bulls 350kg to 450kg averaging €5.03/kg.

Special Tuesday weanling sales commence on August 12 and 26, both at 6 p.m., with day sales starting on September 9 at 10.30 a.m. (annual show and sale).
