Kiltimagh Knock United into Mayo Women's Cup final after penalty shootout

Kiltimagh Knock United booked their place in the McHale Agri, Forest & Garden Mayo Women's Cup final following a penalty shootout with Kilmore under fading light at CMS Park on Friday evening.

The record between the two Division 1 teams this season has been two wins to one in favour of KK, but this time out they couldn't be separated, the game ending 1-1 after extra time.

The opening goal came from Hana Ueno, who was behind so much of KK's creativity, when she sent a splendid strike that caught everyone napping into the Kilmore net after just seven minutes.

Anna McDonnell watched her free out right on 15 minutes go over Lauryn Barrett's goal as KK created numerous chances as the half progressed but nothing more getting through.

Kilmore No. 11 Liadh McGrath posed a speedy threat all evening, sneaking in behind the defence but just wide before a Kilmore corner came off the crossbar on 20 minutes.

KK 'keeper Elaine Duffy was alert to the threat Kilmore posed and pulled off a great save on 40 minutes from McGrath to put the ball up and over.

Both sides had early efforts in the second half, and Kilmore restored parity in the 68th minute through Kathrina Barrett when she got on the end of a good ball.

A Kilmore corner followed almost immediately after but the ball was headed wide, followed soon after by another, and it looked like the tide might turn in their favour.

But a composed KK regathered their momentum, seeing a Ueno strike from distance, and Kate Byrne unlucky to see the ball come off the post in the 76th minute.

KK youngster Siofra McGuinness unleashed a shot that sailed over the bar late on. While one last in-rushing attack on goal by McGrath from a cross was comfortably collected by Duffy in the KK goal as the game ended 1-1.

Both sides created chances in extra time, with Mahon clear of the Kilmore defence at one stage but called back for offside, and Kilmore testing the 'keeper from a tight angle, but again no joy for them.

And so to penalties, with Kiltimagh Knock winning 5-4 to progress to the final where they will meet Castlebar Town.
