Mayo event on repair and reuse of vacant traditional buildings
The National Museum of Ireland Turlough Park, the Architectural Conservation Office from Mayo County Council and the National Built Heritage Service, have held an event entitled ‘Taking on a Traditional House - The Repair and Reuse of Vacant Traditional Buildings.’
Speakers included Siobhán Sexton, Conservation Architect, Mayo County Council; Sarah Jane Halpin and Carl Raftery, National Built Heritage Service; Aoife Leonard, Conservation Architect, Cala Architects; Siobhán Ward, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI); Tom Pollard of Pollard Conservation and Restoration; Nicholas Prins, Conservation Roofer; Mark Peyton, Conservation Joiner, and Michael Barrett of Turlough Lodge, which is a protected structure and is included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage Survey of Mayo.
The talks focussed on vernacular architecture, grants, energy efficiency and approaches to the repair of traditional buildings, with participants taking part in traditional skills demonstrations using earth mortars and lime mortars.
A further two-day course with the Buildings Lime Forum Ireland supported by the National Built Heritage Service, will take place in Westport House, on September 26 and September 27.
This two-day course is led by experienced practitioners and specifiers.
