Mayo group seeks public's help in conducting biodiversity survey

Castlebar Tidy Towns is inviting all local community groups, sports clubs, schools and interested individuals to take part in a simple yet important biodiversity survey – the FIT Count (Flower-Insect Timed Count).

The idea is straightforward: Watch a small patch of flowers (50cm x 50cm) for just 10 minutes and count how many insects visit during that time.

That is all it takes.

This is part of a nationwide citizen science project aimed at measuring change in local biodiversity over time – and your input could make a real difference in building that picture for Castlebar and the wider area.

Whether it is a school garden, community plot, sports ground, roadside verge or simply a window box, all spaces count.

It is a great opportunity to get people engaged with nature and to become more aware of the importance of pollinators in our environment.

A spokesperson for the committee stated: "We would really appreciate your help in taking part and spreading the word.

"If you are interested in getting involved or would like more information on how to do the count, please let us know."

The survey needs to be carried out by the end of September.
