Renewed appeal for safer site with traffic 'chaos' at circus in Mayo county town
A renewed appeal has been issued to find a new site for visiting circuses and carnivals to Castlebar to ensure the tradition can continue in a safe environment.
Councillor Ger Deere has reported there was 'utter chaos' on the Milebush Road over the weekend with haphazard parking as people attended the circus.
Said Councillor Deere, who shared footage of the parking situation (registration numbers have been blurred out): “This photo goes to prove the reason I highlighted why this site at Milebush is totally unsuitable as a location for the circus or carnivals.
“There was utter chaos over the weekend where cars parked on the footpath and doubled parked along the road, impeding traffic and pedestrians and motorists alike. It was a serious safety issue.”
He continued: “We cannot ever let this happen again and a more suitable safer site has to be found to accommodate these events coming to town.
“We all want them to take place. It's a tradition we all grew up with and we want future generations to enjoy in a safe environment.”
