Appeal to stop dumping at Mayo village's clothes bank
A long-term solution to resolve dumping at a clothes bank in Knock has to be found, says a local councillor.
The bank, located in a car park in the village, was overflowing today, with numerous bags left in the vicinity. They have since been removed.
The matter was highlighted by Knock Community Futures earlier today who appealed to whoever keeps leaving bags of clothes and rubbish at the clothes bank in the west car park (beside Knock NS) to stop as it appears they are no longer being collected.
“It is absolutely disgusting and looks so bad for all the tourists passing through Knock,” said the community organisation in a social media post.
Local Councillor Deirdre Lawless has taken up the matter, contacting Mayo County Council to remove the dumped bags, which it has done.
Councillor Lawless, in an update on her social media, said: “I am looking into a long-term solution to stop this dumping from happening. Either the charity can collect more regularly or the clothing bins will have to be removed from the site.
“It is shocking to see this.”
Welcoming the fast response by the council, she added: “I will monitor the situation and work towards a solution that ensures no dumping takes place.”
