Mayo community gathers to pray for safe release of kidnapped Gena Heraty

United in concern, a Mayo community flocked together in prayer yesterday evening to pray for the safe return of humanitarian Gena Heraty and the seven others who have been kidnapped in Haiti.

Mass was celebrated at an overflow gathering in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Cushlough Church, Westport, a few miles from where Gena grew up.

The large attendance included family members of Ms. Heraty.

Her sister, Mary Heraty Wrafter, thanked the congregation for their support.

“It is a huge consolation for the family to know that everybody is praying.

"We are totally devastated, as I am sure you all are. We are still in shock.

“We are consoled by the fact nobody was hurt or injured while they were being kidnapped.

“All we can do is wait and pray. We have hope. Gena has great faith so it is beholden on us all, I think, to hold on to that faith and that hope."

Fr. Britus Kadavunkal, who celebrated the Mass, stated: “We gather here today to pray for Gena, a selfless servant of God who has dedicated her life to caring for children in Haiti.

“We think of Gena and her tireless work in Haiti. She has been a shining example of what it means to serve Christ by serving the least of her brothers and sisters.

“Let us recall her courage, faith, dedication as we continue to remember her in our prayers.

“We pray for Gena’s safe return and ask that she may be safe and continue to protect her as she carries out her mission for Christ.”

Speaking to RTÉ News, Fr. John Kenny, Adm., Westport, said the family are very appreciative of the support and very conscious that people are praying in support of them."

Fr. Kenny said Ms. Heraty is "not one for the spotlight" but loves talking about her work and has always been greatly supported by the local community when raising funds for the orphanage.

"You could see her beaming with enthusiasm and energy around what she does, but like I said, never looking for the credit to herself but always drawing attention to herself.

"That’s just the nature of the person she is. A wonderful, generous, caring and compassionate person - a great human being," Fr. Kenny added.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing to ensure Gena's safe release at the earliest possible date.
