Mayo mountain kicks off Mikey Power’s epic challenge for Special Olympics Ireland
Mikey Power, an endurance athlete and personal trainer from Cork, is gearing up for the ultimate test: the 72 Hour Charity Challenge 2025 – a powerful redemption mission to support Special Olympics Ireland.
From August 7 to 10, Mikey will attempt to climb the highest peak in each of Ireland’s four provinces – all while cycling between them – in just 72 hours.
The lofty Co. Mayo peak of Mweelrea will be the perfect starting point for Mikey’s intense journey. After that he will tackle (in order) Slieve Donard in Co. Down, Lugnaquilla in Co. Wicklow and Carrauntoohil in Co. Kerry.
Mikey is inviting members of the public to join him on any of the four hikes or simply cheer him on at the trailheads as he begins each climb. Your support makes a real difference.

In 2023, Mikey made a valiant attempt at this challenge but was forced to stop after the third peak due to illness. Still, his efforts raised an incredible €17,500. In 2024, he raised €27,924.24, helping to send more than 20 Special Olympics athletes to national and international competitions.
Now, in 2025, Mikey is coming back stronger than ever and determined to finish what he started.
“Last year’s setback lit a fire in me,” says Mikey. “This is my redemption challenge, and I’m doing it not just for myself, but for every athlete who dreams of stepping onto a podium with pride.
“We’re not just climbing mountains – we’re breaking down barriers. I hope people from every corner of Ireland will join me – in person or in spirit – to support a cause that changes lives.”
Special Olympics Ireland is a lifeline for thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities. It gives them the chance to train, compete, make lifelong friendships, and represent their communities and their country, from local events to the world stage.
It costs roughly €870 to send one athlete to the World Games, and Mikey’s challenge helps make that dream a reality. To help in the crusade, log on to Special Olympics Ireland website.
