Mayo river to host major dragon boat regatta

A major national sporting event is coming to Mayo this summer as Dragons Boat Club Ballina hosts its first-ever National Dragon Boat Regatta on the River Moy at The Quay on Saturday, August 16.

This thrilling event, a first of its kind for Ballina will bring together elite dragon boat teams from across Ireland, transforming the town’s historic Quay area into a vibrant celebration of paddling, music, food and community spirit.

Teams from Donegal, Sligo, Dublin, Belfast, Leitrim, Carlow, Carrick-on-Suir and Kilkenny will join the Ballina Dragons for a full day of high-octane racing, with the first heat launching at 9.30 a.m. and the grand final taking place at 3 p.m.

The regatta also marks another exciting milestone for the club, which has just been granted charitable status, a reflection of its ongoing commitment to inclusivity, physical and mental wellbeing, and grassroots community development.

The club’s Lead Crew eecretary, Elizabeth Ferguson, said: “This is so much more than just a regatta. It’s the culmination of hard work, team spirit and community.

"Since I joined the club, I’ve seen how sport, and especially paddling can bring people together, no matter their background or experience. We’re absolutely thrilled to host this event on our home river and can’t wait to welcome teams from across Ireland to Ballina.”

The event promises plenty for spectators too, with live entertainment, food stalls, and family-friendly activities planned throughout the day.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mairéad Melody Carr, manager of Mayo North Tourism, praised the innovation and drive of the club: “It’s incredibly inspiring to see new events like this taking shape in North Mayo powered by passionate, dynamic people who are putting Ballina on the national stage in exciting new ways.

"The dragon boat regatta is not only a sporting spectacle, but also a brilliant boost for tourism in the region. We’re delighted to support it and encourage visitors near and far to come and enjoy the atmosphere along the beautiful River Moy.”

Whether you're cheering on a team or just curious to see what dragon boating is all about, the participants and organisers would love to see you on the banks of the Moy. Come along, soak up the atmosphere, and support this incredible community event!

In more good news, Dragons Boat Club Ballina has also been announced as a national finalist in the Sports Category of the National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2025.

The club is one of five finalists in its category, alongside nominees from Cork, Offaly, Monaghan and Dublin, with the winners to be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony this October.
