Sheep walking out on overgrown Mayo river

A river in west Mayo has become so overgrown that sheep are walking out onto it, but then going down.

It's happening at the Mayour River in Kilmeena and Councillor Johnny O'Malley has been receiving complaints about it.

He has raised issues of overgrowth previously and has called on the OPW for answers about what is going to be done, or it'll have to be taken further.

It's causing disruption for farmers and landowners, he told a municipal district meeting. It's closing in completely and is getting very dangerous.

Councillor O'Malley was told an ecologist had been procured to look at the river and conduct an environmental assessment, and a report can be sought from them.

However, any plans for works at the river would have to go to An Bord Pleanála for approval, he was advised.
