Saturday action marked by clear winners in Mayo GAA club championships
While the Friday evening action in the Mayo GAA football championships was notable for the number of draws, Saturday was marked by clear winners at senior, intermediate and junior level.
There was a bit of a surprise in Castlebar where the Mitchels were defeated by Belmullet, the Erris team – beaten finalists in 2021 – winning by 1-15 to 0-12.
Ryan O'Donoghue was in top form for the winners. His tally of 1-9 included a goal and two from play in addition to two two-point frees.
Elsewhere in the senior championship, 2024 semi-finalists Ballaghaderreen were pushed all the way by Claremorris before winning by four (2-18 to 1-17), while the 2022 champions, Westport, similarly had to work hard before seeing off Mayo Gaels by five (1-18 to 1-13).
There were just two games in intermediate championship. Kilmeena, relegated from senior last year after winning the intermediate title in 2023, laid down a marker with a convincing 3-17 to 1-11 victory over neighbours Burrishoole.
Hollymount/Carramore were also winners, coming back from the trip to Louisburgh with a 3-7 to 0-10 result.
In the junior championship, Ballycastle defeated neighbours Killala by three points (0-11 to 0-8), while Tourmakeady had a good win over Northern Gaels, winning by 1-17 to 0-14 by the shores of Lough Mask.
Round one action continues on Sunday across all three grades.
