Busy schedule of events for Heritage Week in south Mayo town

HERITAGE Week will be celebrated in Ballinrobe from August 16 to 24 and there are a wide range of events being organised.

The dates and events in the south Mayo town are as follows.

Saturday, August 16: Tour of Ballinrobe’s Augustinian Abbey with local archaeologist Richard Crumlish. Meet in the Abbey Street car park at 11 a.m. This is an outdoor event so those taking part are advised to wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Also, the ground in the abbey is uneven so this tour may not be suitable for all.

Sunday, August 17: Explore your family history with Ger Delaney, the local genealogist in the South Mayo Family Research Centre, Ballinrobe. Ger will give a talk on researching your family history, including an overview of the records held by the centre. This event will take place at 3 p.m. in the Parish Centre.

Monday, August 18: To help celebrate the 130th anniversary of Ballinrobe Golf Club, Historical Ballinrobe and the golf club will conduct a guided tour and talk on the history of the Cloonacastle Estate. This is an outdoor tour and will involve some walking, so those taking part are advised to wear appropriate footwear and clothing. The meeting point for this event is the golf club car park at 7.30 p.m.

Tuesday, August 19: Ballinrobe Community School Young Scientist and Technology award winners, Emma Sweeney, Emily Butler and Luke Molloy, will give a presentation on their Swift Conservation project.

The students produced an impressive project on Swift Conservation, which focused on the observation of the feeding habits of fledging common swifts correlating to weather conditions. In January last at the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, the students picked up the Met Éireann Award (Biological and Ecological) for the observation of the feeding habits of fledgling Common Swifts (Apus apus) correlating to weather conditions. They were also awarded the prestigious 1st Senior Group in the category awards for the project.

This will be followed by a talk by Nathy Gilligan on his barn owl nest project.

These events will commence at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Centre.

Wednesday, August 20: Gerry Murphy will give a talk on the life of Dr. Noel Browne, former Minister of Health, and who also lived in Ballinrobe, at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Centre.

Friday, August 22: Ann Reid will lead a tour and talk on the history of Moorehall House and the Moore family. Again, this is an outdoor event and people are advised to wear appropriate clothing. The meeting point is the car park at Moorehall at 11 a.m.

Sunday, August 24: Local artist Ruby Staunton will give a talk and demonstration on the process of making stained-glass, in the Parish Centre, at 3 p.m. This will be followed by the launch of a new QR code tour of the Harry Clarke windows, followed by the launch of Averil Staunton’s new book titled, Harry Clarke, Stained Glass Treasures of Ballinrobe, Cong, Kilmaine and Roundfort.
